Dr. Marc Ellman

One of the highest volume cataract surgeons in the world.

That fact, combined with his use of advanced techniques and the latest technology, draws patients from all over the world for surgery at the Southwest Eye Institute in El Paso, TX, which Dr. Ellman founded in 2004.

If you’re going to have cataract surgery, here are some important questions to ask your potential surgeon:

- How many surgeries do you perform in a week?
- What type of anesthesia do you use?
- Do I have to use drops after the surgery?
- What technology do you have for cataract surgery?

Experienced and Reputable

Many people think that in order to have the “best” cataract surgery they need to go to one of the “prestigious” names in healthcare. If you search Dr. Ellman on the Internet, you won’t find much information. That’s because he spends his time operating, not writing articles or trying to promote himself. What really counts with microsurgery is experience. Typically, the higher the volume, the lower the complication rate and the more refined the techniques.

At the Southwest Eye Institute, Dr. Ellman offers a unique cataract surgery program for his patients who come from near and far to benefit from his unique techniques:

Experience – When it comes to finely detailed surgery like cataract surgery, experience counts.  Our primary cataract surgeons have dedicated their careers to cataract surgery and perform a higher volume of cataract procedures than most surgeons in the world!

Attention to Detail – Your surgeon will personally review your measurements and help choose the best intraocular lens for you that will be placed at the time of the surgery.

Advanced Technology (for patients who qualify, may incur additional costs):

  • Laser cataract surgery – We have a Lensar® femtosecond laser which helps perform the surgery with higher precision than can be performed by hand.
  • ORA lens verification system – The ORA machine uses laser based technology to help refine the lens measurements leading to a decreased chance of needing glasses.
  • Advanced technology intraocular lenses – We have an inventory of thousands of lenses to correct such things as astigmatism and to help patients see near, intermediate, and far at the same time (including the exciting new Panoptix® trifocal lens).

Dropless Cataract Surgery – that’s right! We were the first center in Texas to offer no drop / no prescription cataract surgery and we are still the only center in our region and one of the few in the world to offer this amazing option that saves you the time, cost, and hassle of needing prescription eye drops after your cataract surgery.

Specialized Travel Program – If you choose to travel to us for your care, we have a unique program that will allow you to get all exams, measurements, and surgery in both eyes in as little as two days! In fact, most of our patients spend just one or two nights in El Paso and benefit from our cutting-edge care, although many decide to stay longer and explore this beautiful region.

Surgical Ambassador Program – Each patient is assigned a surgical ambassador who will guide you through the process and can also assist with transportation, lodging, and more.
